The safe desk · Ratings before marketing

The safe desk · September 2026 edition

Which gun safe or home safe actually protects your family? Start with the rating.

Every pick is checked against expert standards first (UL burglary listings and UL 72 fire classes), then published steel, locks and bolt-down. Where the evidence is missing, we say so.

Why trust this desk

What we check, and what we refuse to claim

  • Certification before catalog

A UL listing outranks a gauge number, and a gauge number outranks a marketing adjective. Every product card shows which one it has.

  • Who rated the fire claim

“60 minutes at 1,200°F” means little until you know who ran the test. We name the lab, or label it a manufacturer claim.

  • A published rubric

Every score is a weighted sum you can recompute. The weights are on How We Rate.

  • No fake testing, no stale prices

Every pick is labeled “Researched,” with CPSC recall checks dated. Prices appear only when they're live.

  • The Rankings

How to Choose a Gun Safe

The five-question checklist we use: threat, rating, size, placement and humidity. Plus the types of gun safes, where to buy one and the mistakes first-time buyers make.

  • Ratings Explained

    Safe Fire Ratings Explained

A fire rating is a class, a time, a furnace temperature and a tester. How UL 72 classes work, why ETL and UL ratings beat maker claims, and how to compare labels fairly.

  • Setup & Storage

    Storing Guns Safely With Kids

The locked, unloaded, ammunition-separate rule for families, the keys-and-codes weak spot, how to talk to kids, and what child-access prevention laws are, with sources.

  • Setup & Storage

How to Bolt Down a Gun Safe

Anchoring a gun safe to concrete, a wood subfloor or through carpet: the hardware, the steps from the makers' own instructions, and the mistakes that undo the job.
